Islamic Relief Pakistan starts implementation of Ramadan Programme benefitting 5,160 families (36,120 individuals)

Islamic Relief Pakistan has started its Ramadan Programme, distributing food packs to 5,160 impoverished families (36,120 individuals) of AJK, KP, Balochistan and Sindh. The purpose of these distributions is to share the Ramadan Barakah and address food security for the most vulnerable households in food deficient areas as one third of the population of the country does not have access to food needed for adequate nutrition. Each food packet holds 40kg of food that is important to the local diet of the recipients, and is designed to help a family of five to seven people. This generally includes rice, lentils, oil, salt, sugar, flour, tea, milk, and dates.

islamic_reliefWhile talking to the media persons here in Islamabad, Dr. Fayaz Ahmed Country Director for Islamic Relief Pakistan (IRP) said “The Ramadan Programme is designed to complement IRP longer-term relief and development projects that provide sustainable assistance in improving living conditions of vulnerable communities”.

Our Seasonal Programme will foster the Ramadan Spirit to ease the burden of the less fortunate during the festive month. These food packs will last a family for a whole month and make a significant difference to people’s lives as they can focus on the holy month, and not worry about sourcing food, Dr. Fayaz added.

While answering to a question about beneficiary selection, he informed that Islamic Relief Pakistan aims to select families who are the most vulnerable and in need, i.e. female-headed households, people with disabilities, and families consisting of orphans.

Our field teams conducted surveys in coordination with the village committees to reach out the most deserving. During all our distributions we strive to protect the dignity of our right holders and make sure people in need get the food of their choice and liking, he explained. Dr. Fayaz also thanked Islamic Relief donors for their remarkable contributions for the wellbeing of the deserving communities. We uphold our duty of custodianship and the trust people place in us as humanitarian and development practitioner, he added.
