Civil Society welcomed Supreme Court calls for local government polls

Representatives of various civil society organizations across Pakistan in Sungi Development Foundation office on Thursday welcomed Supreme Court calls for local government polls and directions to the federal and provincial governments to present their stance and seek date for holding local bodies polls in all the provinces and Federal Capital.

pakistan_electionsIn a meeting with representative of more than 100 civil society organizations (KP based local CSOs) also regretted that despite their commitments the new governments too have done nothing about Local Government polls in their respective provinces.

Executive director of leading Non-Government Organization, Sungi Development Foundation Sajid Mansoor Qaisrani said that following the Supreme Court directions the elected governments should hold local bodies elections as they were promised before the general elections.

He said civil society facing numbers of basic issues has demanded of the new governments to take immediate steps for holding local bodies election in the country so that problems of people could be resolved at grassroots level. He also said LG is the only system which local public representative could make more accountable to the local people.

He said that it is necessary to hold the local government elections to ensure participation of the general public in the good governance and fulfill the command of the constitution.
