United Nation’s WFP and NDMA to establish humanitarian warehousing network

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) laid foundation of a warehouse to preserve and dispense food stuffs and life saving drugs in Rush Khan Purr village, Muzaffargarh district. Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority, representatives of donor governments from Japan and Canada attended a ground breaking ceremony to inaugurate the project. Jean-Luc Sib lot, representative and country director, WF Pakistan, Major General Mohammad Salem, Chairman NDMA, Jason Talk, first secretary (development) of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA); NaoakiKamoshida, Counselor/Head of Economic and Development Section, Embassy of Japan were present on the occasion.

wfpAddressing on the occasion, Jean-Luc Siblot said, recurring emergencies in Pakistan substantiate the need to strengthen the country’s emergency disaster response capacity at all levels. APP reported.

“The priority for WFP and its partners through these on-going efforts is to establish a humanitarian warehousing network in the country to ensure fast, effective and reliable logistics response mechanism at every level”, he said.
He added that the project was initiated with the assistance of Government of Pakistan in order to protect and empower communities most at risk”, he said.

Jason Tulk said, the project was part of capacity building for emergency response for NDMA and PDMAs in strategic locations to accommodate the humanitarian need. “We have built district warehouses as part of large Disaster Management Programme”, he said.

Warehouse was built at seven acres land in the village of Muzaffargarh which also included generators, an electric forklift and plastic pallets.
